I am a deeply spiritual person who believes in an infinite consciousness I call God. But I am not a fan of organized religion, because its authorities insisted that I put God into a box of human form and gender, and that I must adopt, without question, a particular belief system. Being forced to adopt limiting beliefs about what should be limitless seemed very much like a refusal to appreciate the truth of the unfathomable vastness of the cosmos.
I believe God was God long before human beings were human beings. I believe God was God long before human beings created labels, religions, and beliefs about God. I believe we are all created in the divine image and therefore are equally beautiful and valuable in God’s heart. I believe what is most important about us to God is how lovingly and responsibly we treat other people and all life, because the universal spiritual truth that guides my faith is that a loving God gave the Golden Rule to all world religions/spiritual philosophies.
Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. ~ Christianity
What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man. ~ Judaism
Not one of you is a believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. ~ Islam
One should not behave towards others in a way which is disagreeable to oneself. ~ Hinduism
Hurt not others with that which pains yourself. ~ Buddhism
This is not a complete list, as I have only included the world’s top five religions/spiritual philosophies. Yet the Golden Rule is the foundation for other world religions, as well, and provides proof “God” was instrumental in the establishment of all religions and spiritual philosophies. To accomplish our universal divine directive – treat your neighbor as you want to be treated – requires that our daily spiritual practices actually inspire us to create lives of equity, peace, respect, empathy, responsibility, environmental stewardship, and cooperation.
To create our best lives, we embrace the fact that no matter what religion we were asked to adopt, you and I are spiritual beings on great human adventures. As souls created by divine love, we are charged equally and universally with bringing our best life into being by learning to live as earthly ambassadors of God’s love.
